Arkansas whitewater in the Ozark forest.

Big Piney Creek drops out of the Ozark National Forest highlands in Pope County and runs south toward the Arkansas River near Dover. It is one of Arkansas's best-loved whitewater floats - a designated Extraordinary Resource Water with clear pools, sandstone bluffs, and a steady cadence of Class I-III rapids when the water is up.

The marquee run is Longpool to Highway 164: roughly six miles of lively, read-and-run rapids that draw paddlers from across the mid-South every spring. Upstream from Fort Douglas the gradient steepens; downstream the creek mellows into scenic float water. Most of the corridor sits within the Ozark National Forest, with USFS recreation areas providing put-ins, take-outs, and camping.

Big Piney is a rain-dependent, free-flowing creek - it runs December through May after storms and goes too low to paddle through summer. It also rises and drops fast, so the live gauge matters more here than on almost any other river on this site. Bring whitewater skills, cold-water layers, and a healthy respect for rising water.

Floating Big Piney Creek from Russellville, Dover & Clarksville.

Big Piney sits in the Ozark National Forest just north of the I-40 corridor - about 25 minutes from Russellville and roughly 2 hours from Northwest Arkansas.

  • From Russellville (~25 min). The regional hub for hotels, food, and supplies, and the closest city base for a Big Piney weekend. Stock up here before heading into the forest.
  • From Dover (~10 min). The last-stop town before the Forest Service put-ins at Longpool and the Hwy 164 bridge.
  • From Clarksville & Hector (~30-40 min). Alternate approaches from the west and north, both within easy reach of the upper runs.
  • From NWA (Fayetteville, Bentonville, ~2h). A scenic drive south via I-49 and I-40, or the Hwy 7 / Hwy 123 route through the Ozark highlands.

Moore Outdoors near Dover rents canoes, kayaks, and rafts and runs shuttles when the creek has water; experienced paddlers self-shuttle between the free Ozark National Forest accesses. Either way, check the live gauge first - Big Piney only runs after rain.

Big Piney Creek float trips.

Runs link the Ozark NF access points between Hwy 123 (Fort Douglas), Longpool Recreation Area, and the Hwy 164 bridge near Dover. Longpool to Hwy 164 is the classic.

Hwy 123 (Fort Douglas) to Longpool Full Day

~9 mi · upper run · Class II-III read-and-run at good flows.

~6 mi · the signature run · lively, continuous rapids.

Helton's to Twin Falls Half Day

~5 mi · scenic lower section · mellower water.

Know the water before you go.

Big Piney is genuine whitewater at good flows - not a lazy gravel-bar float. Difficulty scales sharply with the gauge, so match your skills and your boat to the level you'll actually paddle.

  • Low (around 150-400 CFS). Bony but runnable for kayaks; canoes and rafts will scrape. Technical, read-and-run, fewer consequences.
  • Medium (roughly 400-1,000 CFS). The sweet spot - Class II-III, continuous and fun, the most popular range for the Longpool run.
  • High (over ~1,800 CFS). Pushy and fast with fewer eddies and bigger holes. Experienced paddlers only; above this it reads "High / Fast" on the live badge.
  • Flood. Big Piney spikes hard and fast in heavy rain. When the gauge is surging, stay off - strainers and cold water turn dangerous quickly.

Always wear a PFD and a helmet, paddle with a group, and know how to self-rescue in moving water. This is a creek where the live reading should drive your go / no-go call.

Plan a safe trip.

Seasons

  • December to May. The whitewater season. Flow depends on rain, but this window holds water far more reliably than summer.
  • March to April. Peak. The most consistent flows and the busiest weekends at Longpool.
  • June to September. Usually too low to run - the creek drops to a trickle in summer heat.
  • October to November. Foliage floats are possible after fall rains, but flow is hit or miss.

Hazards & safety

  • Flashy water. Big Piney rises and falls fast. A safe level can become dangerous within hours of heavy rain - watch the gauge trend, not just the number.
  • Real rapids. Class II-III at good flows demands whitewater skills, a PFD, and a helmet. This is not a beginner gravel-bar float.
  • Cold water. The season is cold-weather paddling. Dress for immersion; hypothermia is a genuine risk on winter and early-spring runs.
  • Strainers & wood. Fallen trees and logjams shift after every flood. Scout blind corners and never paddle into a strainer.
  • Spotty cell coverage deep in the Ozark NF - tell someone your plan.
