Closest float to Northwest Arkansas.
The Illinois River runs about 145 miles from its Washington County headwaters through Siloam Springs and into Oklahoma, eventually reaching Lake Tenkiller. The float corridor that matters for NWA day-trippers runs roughly from Savoy down through Siloam Springs to the Watts, Oklahoma line, where the river ends at WOKA Whitewater Park.
The Illinois is designated Extraordinary Resource Water by the state of Arkansas, which protects its water quality and limits pollution. Combined with a stable year-round base flow and Class I to II current, that makes it the most consistent family-float river in the region. Where the Mulberry and Buffalo go too low in summer, the Illinois keeps running.
It's also the easiest float to do as a half-day from anywhere in NWA. Savoy is twenty minutes from Fayetteville. Siloam Springs is thirty. The Edmondson access into WOKA Whitewater Park is about forty-five minutes. You can float in the morning and be home for dinner. Where to base from, where to eat.
Siloam Springs Middle
Charming downtown built around a restored 19th-century plaza, with a walkable Main Street of restaurants, cafes, and shops. The downtown Kayak Park sits right on the river and is a destination of its own. After a float, the downtown restaurant scene is the obvious move.
Savoy Upper
Small rural area at the upper put-in. Not much in town. Drive back into Fayetteville or Springdale for meals after an upper-section float.
Tahlequah, OK Lower
Historic capital of the Cherokee Nation. Restaurants, the Cherokee Heritage Center, and an attractive downtown make it a good base for Lower Illinois floats. About 45 minutes from Siloam Springs.
Watts, OK Lower
Tiny town at the WOKA Whitewater Park finish. Limited services. Most floaters head back into Siloam Springs or Tahlequah for post-float food.
Post-float food
Downtown Siloam Springs is the easiest post-float meal stop for Middle Illinois floats. After an Upper section float, drive back into Fayetteville or Springdale for the NWA food-hall and brewery scene. After a Lower / WOKA float, Tahlequah or back across the line to Siloam.

Seasons
- May to September. Peak season. Year-round flow keeps the Illinois floatable when the Mulberry, Kings, and even parts of the Buffalo go dry. Weekends busy.
- April. Cooler water, fewer crowds, still reliable flow.
- October to early November. Foliage season, sometimes great conditions if rain has kept the river up.
- Winter. Floatable for layered private boaters but cold. Most outfitters closed.
Hazards & safety
- Family-friendly does not mean zero risk. Class I to II current still includes strainers, undercuts, and the occasional surprise hole. PFDs on, period.
- Glass containers prohibited on the Oklahoma stretch by state law, and discouraged everywhere else. Use cans or hard plastic.
- Watch the WOKA Whitewater Park finish. The engineered features are fun but warrant a scout before running first time. Take-outs are clearly marked.
- Crowds at peak summer can make the popular Siloam Springs Kayak Park to Gypsy Camp run feel packed. Aim for weekdays or shoulder hours.
