A quiet creek with big bluffs.

War Eagle Creek flows about 65 miles from its Boston Mountains headwaters in southern Madison County north through Hindsville and Huntsville, eventually emptying into Beaver Lake. The float corridor runs through Madison County, framed by towering Ozark limestone bluffs that punch well above the creek's modest Class I current.

This is the underrated NWA float. Forty-five minutes from Fayetteville, far less crowded than the Illinois or the Buffalo, and home to the historic War Eagle Mill and the twice-yearly War Eagle Fair (one of the largest crafts fairs in the country). Withrow Springs State Park sits on the creek and provides free public put-in and take-out access plus a developed campground.

War Eagle is best March through June. After that, summer levels drop and most of the standard runs require kayaks rather than canoes. The corridor's quiet character makes it a favorite for fishing trips, leisurely paddles, and groups who'd rather avoid the crowds at more popular rivers.

Huntsville · Madison County seat Nearby

The county seat with a working courthouse square, grocery stores, gas, and a handful of diners and chain restaurants. The closest town with reliable post-float food.

War Eagle Mill Primary

Historic working grist mill at the Hwy 12 covered bridge. The mill grinds flour and cornmeal you can buy on-site, and there's a small cafe serving Ozark breakfast and lunch. Famous for the twice-yearly War Eagle Fair (one of the largest craft fairs in the country, held each May and October), which packs the area with vendors and visitors.

Post-float food

The War Eagle Mill cafe is the most atmospheric post-float stop on the creek (seasonal hours). For a full sit-down meal, drive into Huntsville or back into Springdale / Fayetteville for the NWA scene.

Other things to do

Seasons

  • March to June. Prime season. Reliable flow, wildflowers, the most comfortable air and water temperatures.
  • July to August. Often too low for canoes. Kayaks can still run the lower stretches with some gravel scraping.
  • September. Typically too low unless heavy rain has passed through.
  • October to November. Foliage season. War Eagle Fair in October. Flow depends on fall rains.
  • December to February. Possible for hardy paddlers after rain but cold.

Hazards & safety

  • Cold water in shoulder season. Pack a dry change for early spring and late fall trips.
  • Low-water bridges in places along the corridor can become strainers in higher flow. Scout if water is rising.
  • Private property. Stay on gravel bars for lunch stops; the creek crosses a lot of private land.
  • Spotty cell coverage in the canyon sections.
