The quieter sister of Big Sugar.

Little Sugar Creek drains the southwestern corner of McDonald County, Missouri, eventually joining the Elk River at Pineville. Where Big Sugar gets the marquee outfitter operation and bluffs, Little Sugar is the quieter sibling with crystal-clear water, gravel-bar lunches, and some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the region.

The standard outfitter run includes two portages around low-water obstacles, so this is not a hands-off float. But the water itself is consistently described as gin-clear, and the trip ends at Three Rivers Canoe & Campground at the Elk River confluence, which means you can extend into an Elk float the next day with the same shuttle.

Like its sister creek, Little Sugar's float window depends on recent rain. Best April through June. By late summer the creek typically drops below floatable for canoes.

Frequently asked.

Is Little Sugar Creek floatable today?

Check the live status badge at the top of this page. It pulls the current Pineville-gauge reading from USGS. Floatable usually means at least 80 CFS.

What are the portages?

The standard Three Rivers run includes two carry-arounds at low-water obstacles. Plan extra time and pack light. Three Rivers can describe current conditions when you book.

What's the difference between Little Sugar and Big Sugar?

Both creeks join the Elk near Pineville. Little Sugar is the smaller, quieter sibling with two portages and gin-clear water. Big Sugar has more developed outfitter access, bigger bluffs, and the Jesse James cave.

Are there RV hookups on Little Sugar?

Not directly. Use the Elk River outfitter campgrounds (River Ranch, Eagle's Nest, Two Sons) 15 minutes south for RV hookups, or Roaring River State Park 45 minutes east for full hookups.

Can I combine Little Sugar with an Elk River float?

Yes. Three Rivers Canoe is at the Elk confluence, so you can take out from Little Sugar one day and put in on the Elk the next with the same outfitter relationship.
