Bryant
Creek. Float Guide

The North Fork’s quiet sister - a clear Ozark creek that gathers near Ava and runs past Rippee Conservation Area and the Hodgson Mill country to Norfork Lake at Tecumseh. Spring and early-summer floats, gravel bars and hardly anyone else.

Bryant Creek.

Bryant Creek is the stream most people drive past on the way to the North Fork. It rises in the hills south of Mansfield, slides southeast past Ava and Rippee Conservation Area, picks up the big spring at Hodgson Mill, and empties into the Bryant arm of Norfork Lake at Tecumseh on Hwy 160 - about 45 miles of clear, gravel-bottomed Ozark creek with bluffs, caves and almost no development.

It floats like a smaller, shyer North Fork: Class I riffles and pools, a few Class II drops at good flows, and long quiet reaches where the only sounds are kingfishers and your paddle. Smallmouth and goggle-eye fishing is excellent. The land along it is a patchwork of Mark Twain National Forest, MDC conservation areas and private farms - camp on gravel in the public stretches and respect every posting elsewhere.

What makes it floatable is spring rain on top of modest spring baseflow. The USGS gauge at Tecumseh has an 81-year record, and the March-June paddling window here (340-1100 CFS) is drawn from it. Two cautions: the gauge sits at the very bottom of the creek near the lake, so the upper floats from Vera Cruz and Rippee run noticeably smaller than the number; and by midsummer the creek thins to a kayak-only scrape above Sycamore.

There is no outfitter on Bryant Creek. Bring your own boats, run your own shuttle on the county roads, and enjoy having an Ozark creek largely to yourself.

Floating Bryant Creek from Ava, Gainesville and Mountain Home.

The creek runs through the empty middle of the Missouri Ozarks, about 3 hours from NWA and an hour north of Mountain Home.

  • From Ava (~20-30 min). The Douglas County seat - the closest town to Vera Cruz and Rippee.
  • From Gainesville (~25 min). Handy to the lower accesses at Sycamore and Warren Bridge.
  • From Mountain Home, AR (~1h). North on Hwy 5 and 160 - pairs naturally with the Norfork tailwater and North Fork.
  • From Springfield / Branson (~1h 15m). East on Hwy 60 or 76 to Ava.
  • From NWA (~3h 15m). A weekend trip, ideally combined with the North Fork or Norfork Lake.

No outfitter runs Bryant Creek - it is a self-shuttle float. The MDC accesses have parking; county roads between them are gravel and well signed.

Where to put in.

Access is via Missouri Department of Conservation sites: Vera Cruz and Rippee Conservation Area up top, Sycamore Access mid-way down, and Warren Bridge Access a few miles above Norfork Lake. Hodgson Mill, the historic landmark between Rippee and Sycamore, is private - admire it from the water.

Vera Cruz to Rippee Access Rain window

About 4.6 miles of small upper creek from the Vera Cruz access into Rippee Conservation Area - spring flows only; the gauge needs to be well above the minimum for this one.

Rippee Access to Sycamore Access Overnight

About 23.2 miles through the loneliest middle reach past the Hodgson Mill spring - a two-day float with gravel-bar camping in the national-forest stretches.

Sycamore Access to Warren Bridge Access Day float

About 7.7 miles of the biggest water on the creek, ending a few miles above Norfork Lake - the most reliable Bryant Creek day float.

No outfitter, no rental, no shuttle service on Bryant Creek. The North Fork liveries a few miles east (Dawt Mill, Sunburst Ranch) are the nearest rentals if you need boats.

Other things to do

  • Hodgson Mill. The photogenic 1897 mill and spring on Bryant Creek at Hwy 181 - private property, viewable from the road.
  • North Fork River. Blue-ribbon trout and smallmouth water one valley east, with liveries and campgrounds.
  • Norfork Lake. The clear Corps lake the creek empties into - swimming and flatwater at Tecumseh.

Plan a safe trip.

Seasons

  • Spring (Mar-May). The season - rain on spring baseflow keeps the whole creek floatable; the upper runs need it.
  • Early summer (Jun). Usually still good from Rippee down; the creek clears and warms for swimming.
  • Late summer and fall. Thin above Sycamore - kayaks only on the lower creek, and only when the gauge cooperates.
  • After hard rain. Bryant rises fast and carries wood; let the crest pass before launching.

Hazards & safety

  • Gauge at the bottom. USGS 07058000 sits near Norfork Lake - the Vera Cruz and Rippee floats run smaller than the reading.
  • Strainers. A narrow, forested creek collects downed trees on bends - scout, portage, never run blind at high water.
  • Private land. Much of the creek is private between the public stretches; use MDC accesses and respect postings.
  • Remote. Expect no cell signal between accesses; float with company and leave a plan.
  • Lake backwater. Below Warren Bridge the creek slows into Norfork Lake - do not plan to float past it without a motor or a long paddle.

Our live badge is a summary, not a substitute for judgment. Cross-check the raw gauge record on USGS station 07058000, and see the Missouri Department of Conservation for regulations, fishing licenses, and access updates. Conditions change fast out here - when in doubt, call a local outfitter.

Written by lifelong Ozark floaters.

Float NWA is built by an Ozarks couple whose first dates were overnight gravel-bar floats on the Buffalo. We made this site because a river stops being intimidating the moment you know the put-ins, the miles, and the water level - and we want you to float the Bryant Creek with that same confidence. Every access point, outfitter, and hazard in this guide is researched and hand-checked, and the levels come straight from USGS gauges. Read the story behind Float NWA - and if anything here looks wrong, tell us and we will fix it.

Frequently asked.

Can I navigate the Bryant Creek with no cell signal?

Yes. Cell service is unreliable on Ozark rivers - it can drop out under bluffs and in the hollows even on stretches that run close to town - so set up before you launch. While you still have wifi or signal, open Float Mode and it saves the Bryant Creek map to your phone. On the water it runs fully offline, using your phone's GPS to show your live position on the river, the distance to your next take-out, and how far along your float you are. It is free, runs in your browser, and needs no app-store download or account.

Where is the Bryant Creek gauge?

USGS 07058000, Bryant Creek near Tecumseh, MO, at the bottom of the creek near Norfork Lake. Its 340-1100 CFS window here is drawn from the gauge’s 1945-2026 record over the March-June float season. It is the Bryant Creek gauge, not a Norfork tailwater gauge, despite sitting near the dam town.

When can you float Bryant Creek?

March through June in a normal year, within a week or two of good rain. The lower creek (Sycamore to Warren Bridge) holds up longest; the upper floats from Vera Cruz and Rippee want the gauge comfortably above the minimum.

Is there an outfitter on Bryant Creek?

No. It is bring-your-own-boat and self-shuttle. The nearest rentals are the North Fork River liveries a few miles east.

Is Bryant Creek the same as the North Fork?

No - they are parallel streams that both feed Norfork Lake. The North Fork is bigger, spring-fed and has trout and outfitters; Bryant Creek is smaller, quieter and warmer.

How far is Bryant Creek from NWA?

About 3 hours 15 minutes from Fayetteville via Springfield and Ava, or via Harrison and Mountain Home to the lower accesses.
